How to choose your alpine ski boots: flex, size, and width

Comment choisir ses bottes de ski alpin : flex, pointure et largeur

Raphaël Guillemette

The boot is the direct link between your body and your skis. An excellent pair of skis with poorly fitted boots will often provide a worse experience than simpler skis with a perfectly fitted boot.

ABSOLUTE PRIORITY
The right size and width come before flex or brand. The heel must remain stable, the toes should not be crushed, and the foot must not slide around.

Understanding Mondopoint

Ski boots generally use the Mondopoint system, which corresponds roughly to the foot length in centimeters. A 26.5 cm foot therefore starts around a size 26.5, but the shape of the shell and liner heavily influences the actual fit.

Choosing the flex

Profile

Indicative flex men's/unisex

Indicative flex women's/lightweight

Beginner

60–80

Intermediate

90–110

80–100

Advanced

110–130

100–120

Expert / powerful

120–140+

110–130+

These figures are guidelines. Flex is not perfectly standardized across brands. Weight, strength, and style influence the choice as much as skill level.

Understanding shell width

Width, often called "last," is measured around the metatarsal area on a reference size. About 98 mm corresponds to a more precise fit, 100 mm to a medium fit, and 102–104 mm to a more generous fit, with variations depending on brands and sizes.

GripWalk

A GripWalk sole makes walking easier thanks to a rocker shape and a high-traction sole. It must be used with a compatible GripWalk or appropriate multi-norm binding. An incompatible sole and binding should never be combined.

How to tell if the boot is too big

  • The heel lifts significantly when you flex.
  • You have to tighten all the buckles to the maximum.
  • The foot slides laterally.
  • You feel a delay between your movement and the ski's response.

How to tell if it is too small

  • Sharp, localized pain.
  • Toes constantly compressed.
  • Rapid numbness.
  • Impossible to flex properly without excessive pressure.

Heat molding and adjustments

Many modern boots offer heat-moldable liners, and some shells can be adapted by a professional. For a difficult foot, a good shop fit can have more impact than changing skis.

FAQ

Should I choose the same size as my shoes?

No. Measure your foot in centimeters and use the Mondopoint.

What flex for a beginner?

A softer flex generally makes it easier to flex and progress.

What is the last?

It is a measurement of the shell width at the forefoot, used as a volume reference.

Is GripWalk compatible with all bindings?

No. Always check binding compatibility.

Should a ski boot be very tight?

It should be precise and snug, but not painful.
