How do you choose the right ski size for a child?

Comment choisir la bonne taille de skis pour un enfant ?

Raphaël Guillemette

Choosing the right ski size for a child is essential. Skis that are too long can make turning difficult; skis that are too short may lack stability as the child progresses. The ideal size depends on height, weight, ability, and ski type.

THE STARTING POINT
For a young beginner, you generally want a ski that is easy to maneuver within the manufacturer’s recommended size range. A more experienced child can often use a slightly longer ski. Weight and skill level matter just as much as height.

Why there is no universal length

Two children of the exact same height may need different skis. A very light beginner has different needs than a heavier child who skis fast and already masters intermediate slopes.

  • Child's height.
  • Weight.
  • Technical skill level.
  • Age and physical strength.
  • Terrain type.
  • Ski construction and flex.
  • Goal: learning, recreational, freeski, or performance.

Visual guide for a beginner child

As a general guideline only, junior skis for a beginner are often sized somewhere between the chest and the nose when the ski is placed vertically next to the child. This is not an absolute rule: the manufacturer's weight and height chart remains more accurate.

Weight is often underestimated

The ski must be able to flex correctly under the child's weight. A ski that is too stiff or too long can be difficult to bend, making it more demanding to turn. This is why choosing based solely on age or height can lead to poor results.

Should you go longer so the skis last two seasons?

It’s tempting, but it’s generally not a good strategy. The equipment should help the child learn right now. Skis that are much too long can reduce confidence and control. For a child in a growth spurt, seasonal rentals are the best way to choose a suitable size every winter.

How progression changes length

Beginner

The goal is maneuverability. The child is learning to brake, turn, and control their speed. An accessible ski is often more useful than a model designed for speed.

Intermediate

When turns are better mastered and speed increases, a slightly longer ski can provide more stability.

Advanced

At this level, the type of ski counts as much as the length: groomed, all-mountain, twin-tip, or race. The fit becomes more specific.

What about boot size?

A good ski length does not compensate for ill-fitting boots. The foot must be held without excessive compression. The heel must remain stable, and boot size should be checked every season for children.

Information needed before renting

  • Child's current height.
  • Approximate weight.
  • Current shoe size.
  • Number of seasons skiing.
  • Type of slopes usually skied.
  • Level: first time, beginner, intermediate, or advanced.

Special case: twin-tip skis

A twin-tip ski has a turned-up tail and may have a different contact length than a standard groomed ski. Therefore, the same length numbers do not always provide the same feel. Follow the specific recommendations for the young skier's model and level.

FAQ – Child ski sizing

What ski size for a 120 cm child?

Height alone is not enough. You also need to know weight and skill level. For a beginner, we often prioritize a shorter length within the recommended range.

Should skis reach the chin?

The chin can serve as a visual guide in some cases, but it is not a universal rule. Weight, skill level, and the ski model are more important.

Can I get longer skis to save money?

Avoid significant oversizing. Skis that are too long can make learning more difficult.

How do I know if the skis have become too short?

If the child has grown a lot, gained weight, or progressed significantly, it is worth re-evaluating at the start of the season.

Are rentals useful for managing growth?

Yes. This is one of the main advantages of a seasonal junior rental.
