A skier’s height is only a starting point for choosing a ski length. Weight, ability level, speed, and ski type can shift the ideal length by several centimeters.
GENERAL GUIDELINE |
Why weight matters so much
The ski must flex under your weight. A heavy person on a ski that is too short and soft may lack stability. A light person on a long, stiff ski may have difficulty engaging the edges.

Why ski type changes the size
A freeride ski with a lot of rocker has less edge in contact with the snow than a piste ski of the same length. It can therefore be chosen longer without becoming as difficult. Conversely, a piste ski with a lot of camber and a long effective edge may feel more powerful.

FAQ – Ski sizing
Should skis reach the chin?
It is only a guideline. Weight, ability level, and ski type are more important.
Is a longer ski faster?
It can be more stable at high speeds, but speed also depends on construction, waxing, radius, and the skier.
Is a short ski always easier?
It is generally more maneuverable, but if it is too short, it can become unstable.
Should you choose longer for a rockered ski?
Often yes, because the edge length in contact can be shorter, but follow the manufacturer's recommendations.
